Bringing together organisations, professionals and experts working across the environmental and sustainability sectors, Ecomondo provides an important platform for exchanging knowledge and exploring solutions for the ecological transition. Its focus on the integrated water cycle, renewable energy and sustainable cities makes it a particularly relevant meeting point for the LIFE TURBINES project.

The project was represented by consortium partner REDINN, with the presence of Fabio Buccolini, member of Utilitalia, the Italian federation of water utilities, and Leonardo Piccinetti, CEO of REDINN and member of Water Europe. Their participation brought LIFE TURBINES into contact with wider European and Italian networks working on water management, innovation and sustainability. Within the consortium, REDINN contributes to coordinating communication activities, disseminating project results and supporting the market replicability of the solutions developed.

At the heart of LIFE TURBINES is a practical approach to recovering renewable energy from existing drinking water infrastructure. Urban water networks use pressure-reducing valves to keep pipes operating safely, but the energy behind the pressure drop is normally dissipated as heat. By replacing or augmenting these valves with micro-turbines, the project converts that pressure into electricity without requiring a new water source, a new dam or changes to water quality. Across 13 pilot cases in Spain and Italy, LIFE TURBINES has demonstrated the potential to generate almost a million kWh per year and avoid 257.81 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

REDINN’s presence at Ecomondo reinforces the importance of connecting innovative projects with the wider water and sustainability community. By sharing the LIFE TURBINES approach and its progress, the consortium aims to encourage further discussion about how water utilities and cities can make better use of existing infrastructure as part of the energy transition. The ambition is clear: turn an overlooked resource within urban water networks into an opportunity for local renewable energy generation and solutions that can be replicated elsewhere.

LIFE TURBINES was represented at Ecomondo 2026, the international green technology expo taking place in Rimini, Italy, from 3-6th November.
